How do I know if my freight forwarder is actually performing?
Measure more than whether cargo eventually arrived. Track quote-to-final-invoice variance, transit reliability, exceptions, accessorial frequency, free-time management, document accuracy, customs coordination, response and escalation speed, reporting quality and whether the forwarder brings alternatives before a problem becomes expensive.

Review by lane, not by overall impression. Patterns in invoices and exceptions show where the program needs attention.
What I Check First
- 1.How often does the final invoice materially differ from the approved quote, and why?
- 2.Which exceptions recur by lane, carrier or origin?
- 3.What recommendations has the forwarder proactively brought in the last quarter?
In practice
A forwarder can be responsive and still be commercially weak if nobody is challenging routes, recurring accessorials or repeated exceptions.
