Have cargo to move—or a freight decision to make?

I help importers and exporters plan and arrange freight, and work through the decisions around it: how a press gets to the plant, whether a transformer needs breakbulk, or what a shipment will really require after it lands.

One lane. One quote. One second opinion.

If you import or export regularly, send me one current lane or freight problem. I’ll show you what I would investigate before the next booking.

Freight Forwarding & NVOCC

What is the difference between demurrage and detention?

Demurrage is charged for cargo sitting inside the terminal beyond the agreed free time. Detention is charged for keeping the carrier's equipment outside the terminal beyond its free time. The two run on separate clocks, are often billed by different parties, and can both appear on one delayed container.

Complex & Oversized Cargo

When should cargo move flat-rack instead of breakbulk?

Flat-rack transport carries cargo on an open container platform when the assigned equipment, carrier and route accept the packed dimensions, weight and securing plan. Compare breakbulk and RoRo when those conditions fail or another mode better fits the shipment. Choose using written acceptance, complete delivery costs and destination unloading readiness.

Duty Drawback Education

What records does a duty drawback programme actually require?

You need an auditable chain from the import entry through inventory to the export or destruction event: entry summaries, commercial invoices, inventory movement records, bills of lading or proof of export, and destruction evidence where relevant. That chain has to stay retrievable for the whole retention period.

Florida Logistics & Ports

How do I choose between Florida ports for an import?

Start with which port your trade lane actually has direct services on, then check terminal capability for your cargo type, then compare inland cost to the delivery point. Proximity alone is the weakest of the three signals, and a closer transhipment-only call can be slower than a further direct one.

What I Check First

Every answer on this site carries the same block: the things an experienced operator looks at before saying anything useful. Same discipline, different problem each time.

Before you accept a house bill

  1. 1.Whose name is on the bill — the vessel operator's or the provider's?
  2. 2.Do consignee and notify party agree across master and house?
  3. 3.Is the release type agreed in writing before the vessel sails?

Before you price out-of-gauge cargo

  1. 1.Are dimensions and weight from a drawing, or from memory?
  2. 2.Which permit, survey or crane window is the longest-lead item?
  3. 3.Is flat-rack genuinely cheaper than breakbulk on this lane?

Before you count on a duty recovery

  1. 1.Can the import entry be traced to the export line by line?
  2. 2.Who owns the record retention, and for how long?
  3. 3.Would this hold up if someone reviewed it two years from now?

How I think about a logistics decision

Raja Torain works in international logistics and trade operations: ocean and air freight forwarding, NVOCC operations, complex and oversized project cargo, tariff and landed-cost exposure, and the internal records and controls behind duty drawback programmes. This is a personal knowledge hub — plain answers to the questions importers, exporters and operators actually ask.

Most of what I know is on this site, free. When you need someone in it with you, that's a different conversation.

More about how I work

The document tells the truth

Who is liable, who controls the booking, who can release the cargo — it is decided by the paperwork already issued, not by the relationship.

Cost is set weeks before the port

Equipment choice, stow, survey and permit windows decide the number. By the time cargo reaches the terminal, most of the money is already committed.

Provable beats eligible

On customs and drawback questions, the useful question is never only whether you qualify. It is whether your records can prove it.

Working through a decision like this?

Send the question the way you'd say it out loud — the lane, the commodity, the constraint. I read every submission. A question only becomes a public answer page with your explicit permission, and it is anonymized when it does.
